Sonita’s strength, drive, and creative talents are impressive and inspirational. Born in Afghanistan, she braved the trek to Iran which included harrowing encounters with the Taliban. At the age of 10 her parent first tried to sell her as a child bride to provide funds for her brother’s dowry. Sonita resisted, and began using rap and video to protest her situation. With grit, determination, and a vision to dictate her own future, Sonita risked her life to reach for freedom. Winner of the World Cinema Documentary award at Sundance 2016, as well as a multitude of other awards, this movie incorporates wonderful music and a captivating story, and should not be missed!
